Contributor's comments: Growing up in Tasmania I've never heard "Big Island" used with regard to the "Mainland".

Contributor's comments: Tasmanians often refer to "the mainland", but another variation I came across in my childhood (1960s and 70s) was "the other side" used instead.

Contributor's comments: We have always called it "the big island" or because we are often left out of references to Australia, we call the mainland "Australia".
