fairy

noun (plural fairies)
the fluffy airborne seed of various plants, such as the moth plant or Scotch thistle. Compare Father Christmas, robber, Santa Claus, wish.

Contributor's comments: If you catch one, you can blow it into the air and make a wish.

Contributor's comments: When I was very young in Perth we used to call these "fairy clocks", because you could tell what time it was in "fairy land" by counting how many blows it took you to blow all the fluffy stuff off (eg three blows = it's three o'clock in fairy land)!
