tiersman

noun (plural tiersmen)
a timber-getter who works in the Tiers (the Mount Lofty Ranges).

Contributor's comments: Never heard of this one. Perhpas I am too young!

Contributor's comments: This is not longer in common use. The Adelaide Hills were originally known as the Tiers to the settlers of early Adelaide. However, tiersman was not used to describe woodgetters, but rather escaped or released convicts from the other colonies, who had set up camp in the Tiers. Convicts were prohibited from settling in South Australia, and they were arrested on sight. The tiersman made off with the livestock and crops of the free settlers.
