either of two large vultures found in the Americas, the endangered Andean condor, Vultur gryphus, formerly widespread in South America but now greatly reduced in numbers, and the critically endangered California condor, Gymnogyps californianus, formerly found in California, now extirpated in the wild and breeding only in captivity.
