mattress (ie soft bit you sleep on). NB also that "mattress" in Tasmanian backwoods means the actual wood and wire bed base: I couldn't sleep last night because my tick (or tic?) was so lumpy....
Contributor's comments: My grandmother purchased strong grey and white cotton fabric to make the outer case of a mattress which she filled with feathers or straw. This cotton fabric was called ticking.
