Contributor's comments: Some schools in SA also have quadrangles - I think this largely depends on the layout of the school, rather than the region of Aust. Assemblies are held in the quadrangle in SA schools too.

Contributor's comments: I went to school on the Gold Coast in the late sixties and early seventies. Burleigh Heads Primary, Tallebudgera Primary and Miami High and the term was widely used then.

Contributor's comments: I spent most of my school life in Sydney (Year 3 to Year 12) and always used the term "quadrangle" to mean that part of the playground used in school assemblies etc. I moved to Perth 10 years ago and my children inform me that they use the word "quadrangle" here also. Perhaps it is becoming an Australia-wide term.

Contributor's comments: We had quadrangles (quad) in Sydney and as far as I know still do. It is a bit of an obscure term otherwise, though.

Contributor's comments: Yallourn High School (Gippsland, Victoria) had two quadrangles. The main buildings were formed the letter E with lesser buildings mostly enclosing the quadrangles. Boys and girls could have separate assemblies.

Contributor's comments: Although my brothers had a quad, I never attended a school with a quad. We had a black top and the basketball courts. I think this was a used a traditional schools. My schools were all built after 1970, when it was no longer fashionable to create purpose built assembly areas.
