hydro

phrase the hydro, the hydro-electric system.

Contributor's comments: As well as referring to the generation system, "hydro" or "the Hydro" also refers to the organisation responsible for it, and to whom one pays ones power bills. This usage continues even though the official name was change from the H.E.C. several years ago.

Contributor's comments: 'Hydro' is also a Tasmanian term for electricity bill - particularly hard to shake when one moves to the mainland.

Contributor's comments: I would use 'hydro' to refer to hydroelectricity.

Contributor's comments: "Hydro" used to be used on the West Coast of Tasmania when I lived there in the 1970s to denote the product as well as the company. You would 'turn on the hydro' when it got too dark to see. You would also pay your 'hydro bill' (on time, of course).
