duck

as an address to a person, as like mate cobber etc: G'day duck; You reckon duck?

Contributor's comments: Duck or "Duckie" as an alternative I recall being generally used by shop assistants as a child in Hobart in the 50s & 60s. There was a lady at Ellison Hawkers' newsagency in Liverpool Street who had a standard phrase "What'll it be duckie - a bag or a lackkie band?" when purchasing magazines or newspapers. I never regarded it as a word specific to Tassie but now realise that I have never heard it used elsewhere.

Contributor's comments: Used for a friend of the opposite gender, although women may use it for same gender friends. Men never.

Contributor's comments: One of my late grandfather's favourite phrases was "G'day duck" or "How are ya duck?"

Contributor's comments: My experience of "duck" is that it's the female equivalent of "cock" (ie used to address females, but used by either men or women). I had never heard either "duck" or "cock" used in this way until moving to Tassie.

Contributor's comments: [Tasmania informant] In my experience 'duck' is was/is a term of endearment, used by women when talking to 'small' children of either gender; as with the shop assistant asking what they would like to buy, and of women addressing other women, particularly as a nurse etc.
