storm bird

Identifies a usually migratory species of bird that has a distinctive call and arrives in a region close to the beginning of the storm season. The two most common are the Common Koel and the Channel-billed cuckoo: It's sure to start raining soon, I heard a storm bird calling yesterday.

Contributor's comments: You might as well add SE Qld to your list. Rick Natranis's (sp?) nature talkback show on 4QR regularly has listeners talking about them. This has always been a popular term, and quite possibly extends through much of the country, describing different birds depending on the region.
