playtime

Morning break at primary school (Vic), when you would eat playlunch: Do you want to play footy at playtime?

Contributor's comments: I was born and bred in Melbourne and have lived here most of my life. At primary school we would have referred to "play time" and "play lunch".

Contributor's comments: I think playtime and play lunch have been used throughout Victoria. A variation is "little play" [morning and afternoon recess] and "big play" [lunchtime]

Contributor's comments: As a child, I went to various primary schools in NSW, from Sydney to Wilcannia. Playtime and Play lunch were quite usual terms to use then, throughout NSW.

Contributor's comments: I first started primary school in Melbourne in 1960. Playtime was regularly used. However in 1964 and 1965 we lived first in Geelong and then Darwin. In both cases they did not use the word playtime. I forget the Geelong word but I remember getting the 'cuts' for being in a fight during 'recess' when I was in Darwin.

Contributor's comments: Although playtime was usually used by teachers to refer to recess, as students in Melbourne we usually called it little play, as it was the smaller of our breaks throughout the day.

Contributor's comments: Playtime was used for both morning and afternoon recess in Gippsland and Northern Victoria in 50s & 60s.

Contributor's comments: Recess. A short morning break (15-20 min) kids get at school: "There was a fight on at recess."
