phernudge

to overstep the mark when shooting at a children's game of marbles; to creep up over the agreed mark from where you play a shot: I saw you phernudge! We said no phernudging! Compare cribbing, cribs, duck-shove. Also, fnudge, fudge.

Contributor's comments: In NSW we used to call it 'Fudging" - same crime, different pronunciation and spelling.

Contributor's comments: In Tassie, you fudged it, got caught fudging or cheating - although associated with playing marbles, also used in other areas, e.g. fudging an exam i.e. cheating in an examination.

Contributor's comments: On King Island this 'crime' was called 'cribbing'.

Contributor's comments: This sounds similar to 'duck-shoving', the action of pushing ones shooting hand over the mark as one 'shoots' the marble, in the process adding momentum and accuracy to the shot.

Contributor's comments: Is the spelling fnudge also known? This is how Phillip Adams spells it.

Contributor's comments: I played marbles in the Southern Riverina in the 1940s and 1950s. We called it "Fernannick", but knew it as "fudge " and "crib" also.

Contributor's comments: [Melbourne informant] I used to use this term a lot when playing marble games. Anyone caught cheating was Phernudging.
