Contributor's comments: I don't believe the word is of Sydney origin. I first heard it in 1955 in Rockhampton QLD where it was commonly used to describe boorish, noisy, car-driving teenagers. I believe it was commonly used for generations in the isolated Queensland cities and only filtered south as car travel made Queensland more accessible to southerners.
Contributor's comments: I was told years ago by a Sydney-sider, amused at the usage of "hoon" in Queensland, that, in Sydney, it meant a pimp. I have been told this again subsequently.
