hiaki
Game whereby circle is drawn in dirt and the person that is 'it' retrieves a stick thrown from the circle. All players hide (behind trees, stumps, etc.) and the player 'it' has to call their name before the stick can be thrown again outside the circle and all those that have been claimed are free to hide again. Played at Primary School. Outer fringe of Melbourne 1977: Who's in Hiaki.
Contributor's comments: We used to play "hiaki" or "hiaki homer" when I was a kid, but there was no stick. An area was assigned as 'base' (often the front steps of a classroom, for example) and whoever was it could only call people when standing on this base. People were 'called' like this: "Hiaki Sally standing behind the tree!" Often the kid who's it would go off to find people, giving others the chance to run to base and shout "Hiaki homer!"
