hard rubbish collection
A periodic, often annual, collection of indestructable rubbish organised by local councils. Householders leave items on the curbside or nature strip. Items are often left for several days and are freely scavenged by neighbours and other "collectors": Don't forget to put the broken chair out for the hard rubbish collection.
Contributor's comments: In Melbourne in various share-houses, scavenging the hard rubbish was known as "hard rubbish shopping", as in "Hey, do you want to come over tomorrow night, we're going hard-rubbish shopping". Special shopping excursions would be conducted to the wealthier areas when they had their hard-rubbish nights.
Contributor's comments: In certain parts of Melbourne (like Preston), hard rubbish night was also referred to as 'skip night', as the collection was done by way of a large rubbish skip dropped in the street. However, with hard rubbish now collected from the kerb on-demand, this expression has probably fallen out of usage.
