emergency teacher
noun a relief teacher.
Contributor's comments: Now known as "casual relief teachers", emergency teachers first came into being in the 60s. Before that teachers would double up classes when a colleague was away, or classes would be split across a number of other classes.
Contributor's comments: We had "emergency teachers" on the far north coast of NSW too. (just south of the Qld border)
Contributor's comments: Emergency teachers in Victoria used to be called E.T.s and some of us felt like extraterrestrials at times but now we have been renamed as Casual Relief Teachers or C.R.T.s though there is nothing casual about facing a grade of children when you don't know the routines or their names.
