my mother who was born late 19th century and lived in Tamworth area often talked of making a hamper with friends, going down to river bank, lighting a fire, cooking a meal and having liquid refreshments after. This she called a gypsy tea - possibly the forerunner of the barbeque: We are having a gypsy tea this evening by the river would you like to come?
