stope

Broken Hill mining term meaning a small vertical shaft climbed with ladders, leading from a drive (qv) to a work area between levels in a mine: We went down 12 levels, walked along the drive for 500 metres and then went up the stopes to continue the rock boring.

Contributor's comments: To say that a stope is the small vertical shaft leading from a drive to a workplace is simply and definitely wrong! The workplace itself is the stope. The small shaft, if it is in rock is know as a "rise" in Broken Hill, almost everywhere else it is a "raise". If the shaft is through backfill it is usually referred to as a ladderway.
