Sparrow (bird): Spoggies are the most common birds in the residential areas of Broken Hill. Compare spagger, sprag, sproggy.

Contributor's comments: "Spoggy" is definitely in wider usage than Broken Hill. I grew up in Port Pirie SA and "spoggy" was the only word that was used for "sparrow". In fact I wouldn't have known what a sparrow was until I was in my teens.

Contributor's comments: Widely used for sparrows all over SA also.

Contributor's comments: [Sydney informant] sparrow: "You don't see many spoggies around here. The maggies have chased them away."

Contributor's comments: In Tyneside, the dialect word is Spuggie.

Contributor's comments: As a kid growing up in Nyngan NSW, sparrows were known as spaggers.

Contributor's comments: "Check out the spoggie on the stobie pole."

Contributor's comments: Among my Adelaide inlaws, the word used is 'Sproggie'.
