noun a special section of a law enforcement agency trained and equipped to deal with emergencies which are particularly dangerous or politically important, as the holding of hostages by terrorists or the hijacking of planes. [S(pecial) W(eapons) O(perations) S(ection)]

Contributor's comments: In America it is referred to as the SWOT, but in Australia this now defunct arm of the police force was the Special Weapons Operation Sector (SWOS). The term is still in unofficial use in the AFP.
