Contributor's comments: I work as an English teacher in Japan, and on a rainy day we had one of those conversations where none of the English speakers can understand the others. I was talking about the gumboots, the british guy was talking about the wellingtons, and the guy from Texas was talking about the rainboots, just as you mentioned. So I wonder if the term came from America, or whether it popped up by itself out there in the middle of the desert ...
